Question by Justin S: Growing up 101- How do I handle getting a car? This is a doozy, so here's some background information: I'm a 24 year old theatre actor. I have a 9 - 5 day job, and when I can get the rides, I audition, rehearse, or perform at nights. I graduated with a BFA in Theatre Performance from FAU in May of last year. Since then, I've secured my full time day job, acquired an apartment, and have acted in three paid regional musicals. There is not a cent of debt to my name. I have just under $ 3,000 in my savings account. I have one secured credit card (hardly any credit yet). The problem: I don't own a car. Not only do I not own a car, I don't know ANYTHING about them. I don't know a Mercedes from a Beetle. I don't know what transmission fluid is or what the battery does. I don't know how to buy or lease a car or anything related to the matter (financing, down payments, interest, Car-Fax, etc). I don't know when to go to a dealership or when to go on Craigslist or when to talk to a bank about loans (my bank or any other). I don't even have a license; I have a learner's permit. Here is what I want: a cheap, reliable car that has A/C. Color, model, brand, ugly, hot, whether it's got a leather interior or roll down windows, IT DOES NOT MATTER. It just needs to be relatively cheap and reliable. What steps should I take? Where to begin? How much can an initial car payment cost? Monthly installments to finance? What do I need to know? I NEED a car to continue moving forward in life, but this seems like such a massive, unsurmountable undertaking. I feel like I'm in way over my head. Options? Advice? Don't buy a new car yet. Go with one you can pay off quick. So it builds your credit (bonus). And since you have very little credit your payments could be pretty high. A good car to start with in my oPinion is a hyundia sonata. They're Cheap. And I have 231000 miles on mine! If u really don't know then I would get a friend to go with you so you don't get beat on a car. And don't forget, shop around!

Hondas, Mazdas, and Toyotas are all very reliable cars. If you take care of the car once you get it, it will take care of itself. Generally these cars will last 120,000+. Think about putting a huge down payment on a car so you have very little monthly payments. It may seem stressful to you right now but it's worth the monthly investment of paying for a reliable care instead of worrying about the "what ifs" with a bought used car that you may find yourself spending more than the initial price you spent in the first place. It depends on what the car dealership pulls for your credit when it comes to monthly payments. You will also need to pay taxes and registration if you are going to a car dealership. Look into certified owned vehicles too. These are used but are certified through car dealerships and have warranties along with them for the most part. Go to car dealerships and speak to a salesman. Do not let them take advantage of you.

Too bad...you made it all the way to 24 w/o a motor-vehicle albatross around your neck. If you'r SURE you need a car, and not a bicycle, scooter, or light motorcycle at WAYYY less money than a car, then you gota start at the non-profit mag, Consumer Reports. They'r totally pro consumer and if they have to bash a major car co, or bank, etc, they'l do it, and are famous for HAVING done it many times. But w/ <$ 3k in the bank, no established credit, and unknown [to YA] monthly net income, I dont see anyway you can finance. You COULD get a co-signer, but even if that financing were accepted, your co-signer would be responsible for all costs that you cant pay and therefore they'd have to have an acceptable monthly income, credit and perhaps downpayment. W/o the co-signer, you'd prob have $ 1000 to $ 1500 cash to spend on the car, plus insurance & registration, etc. And $ put aside for repairs. BUT all that's feasible. I junked an '86 Honda Civic Wagon w/ 103k miles for abt $ 130 that ran fine, needed a battery, $ 70, and catalytic converter, maybe $ 300 or more installed, to pass inspection. I woulda sold it as is for $ 400 but dint have the time. So get informed and look for private sales in local paper. Maybe Craig's list but it's riddled w/ fraudsters. Imo, get a motorcycle.
